Help People Visualise Their Stammer

The Challenge
After researching into stammering I was empowered to create a product to help people live with their stammer. The aim was to get people to engage with their stammer in order to help them come to terms with it.
The Approach
From a UX perspective ideas and prototypes were created and tested within my stammer focus group which was a network with potential users. From a UI/visual perspective the visual style was developed with advice from animators, illustrators and graphic designers.
The Outcome
Speech Bubble is an app designed to help people positively reflect on their stammer and realise that it’s not just about speech.
Client: Personal
My Role: Creator

The Issue
The wider physiological affects of a stammer are invisible and can take over someones life.

The Idea
Speech Bubble is an app designed to help people positively reflect on their stammer and realise that it’s not just about speech. When a new users sign up they start of as a new ‘Speech Bubble’ character. The design is explained below.

How It Works
The aim of Speech Bubble is to get people to engage with their stammer in order to help them come to terms with it. this is done in 3 simple steps. Users reflect on speaking situation when they happen, which creates them a visual or they can share it in the wider community with others who have a stammer.

The Reflection Process
Users identify the moment they are reflecting on when they start the process. This is so they can identify it when they look back and also give their reflection context.

Q1 Emotion
This question is about how they are feeling. Many factors can affect people’s emotions not just speech. This questions allows them to think about their emotions in general.

Q2 Confidence
This question is about how confident they are feeling? Many factors can affect confidence not just speech. This questions allows them to think about their confidence level in general.

Q3 Holding Back
This question is about whether they think they held back or not. Many factors can cause someone to hold back not just speech. This allows them to think about where they held back in general.

Q4 Speech
This question is about if they feel like they said everything they wanted to say.Having a question about speech allows them to see how the other factors have impacted their speech.

Your Reflection
The reflection visualises the user's speech into a character. This is a visual representation of the user's speech.

Progression Over Time
In the ‘Time Line’ feature users can see their ‘Speech Bubble’ and see how the app has helped them on micro or macro scale.

Over 2500 Combination
There are 2520 different of Speech Bubbles so everyone can have a unique ‘Time Line’ but also be able to find users like themselves.

Working Prototype
I teamed up with a developer who helped me create a working prototype of the reflection. It was a fun process, the design was created with ease for development so it was great to work on a prototype.

Conclusion
I thoroughly enjoyed creating Speech Bubble and it was great to get acknowledgement from the stammering community, including therapists, organisations and those who stammer. I hope to one day to be able to launch Speech Bubble as a product to help a community so close to my heart.
